This workshop is an introduction to land surveying for anyone interested in charting the lay of the land. You will have an overview of some of the principles of land surveying, how to recognize evidence of possible lot lines based on reading deeds and plans, information on using datums and how to create a topographic survey and calculating slopes using a total station, levels and an introduction to GPS. This workshop will begin with classroom presentation and instruction and will be followed by hands on field experience. Participants should bring calculators, pencils and paper for notes and calculations. This workshop is co-sponsored by the Tower Hill Botanic Garden.

Guest Presenter: Susan Sullivan, InLand Survey, Inc.DBA ZANCA LAND SURVEYING, Stow, MA

Learn about what land surveying is, its history, and how it is used for defining property boundaries and determining elevations for site construction. This presentation will provide you with the basic knowledge of equipment used for surveying and the processes involved in researching a property and reading and creating a site plan. It will instruct you on the methods used for recording a datum and will include basic classroom instruction to get you prepared for afternoon field work and calculations.

In the hands on portion of this workshop you will learn how to establish horizontal and vertical controls to measure linear distances, angles and elevations and record your findings. Working in groups and using Tower Hill as our example we will tie into existing benchmarks, locate the building and other structures, and record site details and datum that will be used to create a topographic map that you will complete in the classroom.

This workshop will give you the basic skills to help you record field measurements and map out project sites. Get all your questions answered about the land surveying process and help you better determine when an official survey is needed for your clients.

Susan E. Sullivan - is a registered Land Surveyor in Massachusetts working in the Engineering and Land Surveying world for over fifteen years. Sue purchased a well established family Land Surveying Company in 2004. She has a BS in Computer Science with a minor in Art, finally combining the two into computer generated plans. Finding the puzzle of Land Surveying the most interesting part of working in a Civil Engineering environment, she pursued all the necessary education, apprenticeships, interviews and tests to fulfill the registration requirements of the Board of Registration of Land Surveyors. Today, she enjoys keeping up with her diverse clients, educating them on how the rules of land surveying affect their property and working out solutions to meet their needs.
