Guest Presenters: Chip Osborne and Gina Field, The Living Lawn Project, Marblehead MA.
In this presentation Gina Field and Chip Osborne will discuss some compelling reasons why we should consider a natural approach to lawn care. Public health, children’s health, storm-water runoff, and water quality issues are all reasons why we should begin to reduce our dependence on synthetic and chemical products to grow our lawns. Their approach will be “Awareness Through Education”. Armed with sound information about these products, we can then make decisions about how we choose to take care of our lawns.
Chip and Gina will then present “Simple Steps to Organic Lawn Care”©, a detailed approach to a natural lawn care program. Basic steps will be outlined and explained in a common sense approach. The basic premise of this lawn care program is a threefold approach. It involves 1) a basic understanding of soil biology, (an acknowledgement that the soil is very much alive), 2) the proper use of natural, organic products, and 3) some very specific cultural practices. This will be explained so that the do-it-yourselfer will be able to care for the lawn or so that the homeowner can convey their wishes to their landscape contractor. The information in this presentation is also a very good introduction to natural lawn care for the landscape contractor.
Chip Osborne - is a professional horticulturist with over 30 years experience and an expert on building and transitioning turf to organic care. He is accredited by the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) in organic land care, and has attended the University of Massachusetts Green School for turf management. He converted his retail greenhouse operation to an organic management plan, designed and constructed Marblehead's Living Lawn Demonstration site, and, as the elected Chairman of the Town of Marblehead, Recreation, Parks & Forestry Commission, is currently implementing an Organic Turf Management Plan for the town's public lands, including all athletic fields. Chip lectures nationwide on natural turf management, both to homeowners and municipalities.
Gina Field - is co-chair of the Living Lawn Project and the Marblehead Pesticide Awareness Committee, has advocated the health benefits of organic consumption for over 30 years. She is owner of Perennial Garden Service, a garden ‘coaching’ business that takes a hands-on approach to teaching safe and sustainable garden practices. Clients are encouraged to learn from their gardens from the bottom up – determine soil quality and needs, learn the wisdom in planting less and watching the process of growth, observe the effects of light and wind on forming landscape, and experience gardening as a primary connection to nature that is right outside the door.
Don’t miss this educational program. We guarantee a fun and informative time.
